why i need mosquito repellent (or an alarm clock that actually wakes me up)

During the course of my stay in Perugia so far, i’ve somehow managed to acquire 27 mosquito bites on my left arm, 14 on my right arm, 3 on my face, 15 on my right leg, and 9 on my left leg (the count as of last night). because of this unfortunate circumstance, i was itching and scratching all night and barely caught any sleep before my alarm clock tried to wake me up for work at 6:30 AM. it almost succeeded too, if i had not accidentally hit the “alarm off” button instead of the much-beloved “snooze.” FAIL.

i ended up waking up at 7:40 and missed my 7:50 bus to work. thinking that there might still be hope to get to work at a decent hour, i rushed over to the bus station, only to find out that the next bus wouldn’t depart until 11:00. thank you Perugia public transpo.

anyways, i didn’t end up getting to work until 11:30. only 3 hours late (but how DID they manage to make their photocopies without me?). i had hoped that people wouldn’t notice my tardiness, but upon my trying to casually slip in unnoticed, i was immediately approached by one of my co-workers:

Coworker A(not to be confused with Coworker 1 from lunch convo post): what happened?? is everything okay?!
Me: (embarassed) haha, yeah…everything is fine
Coworker A: (teasing) you went out drinking last night, yes?
Me: no!
Coworker A: it is fine, you know! you are young!
Me: i really didn’t go out last night….i missed the bus!

5 minutes later…

Coworker B: are you okay??
Me: haha..yeah…i just missed the bus…
Coworker B: oooohhh, we all thought you went out drinking last night and had a little too much fun. just make sure to call us when that happens so we know where you are.
Me: *nervous laugh* haha, i will…

a number of similar conversations later, with what seemed like every person in the office, i came to wish that the reason for my lateness had been due to excessive drinking. as opposed to excessive itching. *sigh*
